Reaching for their dreams...

Fezekas VoiceFezeka’s Voice, winner of the Best International Documentary at the TriContinental Film Festival 2009, tracks choirmaster Phumi Tsewu as he teaches the students at Fezeka High School everything from manners to Mozart. The doccie follows the group’s journey from Gugulethu to the International Arts Festival in Salisbury, UK. As a result of their stunning performance there, the people of Salisbury raised £30 000 (about R380 000) for a scholarship fund to put seven of the students through university.

Wherever the film has been screened, ‘audiences have been touched in a similar way, no matter what their background,’ says director Holly Lubbock. ‘It gives children permission to reach for their dreams.’ We’re expecting to see Fezeka’s Voice headlining at some of the major international movie festivals this year – watch this space.
