Ageing Gracefully

18 April 2012

An 83-year-old model is making waves in the international modeling industry.

Ageing Gracefully

With her mane of silver locks, elongated neck and cheekbones that could cut glass, Daphne Selfe has a body most 20-somethings would kill for.

Her secret? 'I think it’s partly down to good genes. I’ve never really bothered with skin cream or anything like that, although I might use a bit of Boots (British chain for chemists). I did dye my hair at home for a while when I started to go grey in my early 40s. Occasionally, I would go into L’Oreal as a guinea pig, but it became too much of a bother,' she recently told the Daily Mail Online.

Daphne is signed to Models 1 agency in London and has worked with iconic photographers like Mario Testino and Rankin as well as gracing the pages of Vogue (see our gallery below).

Most recently she posed as Madonna for British charity Oxfam, wearing the Jean Paul Gaultier conical bra and corset. What strikes you most is that Daphne is not vain in the least but does find it important to be groomed and care for yourself. When asked her thoughts on aging, she continued, 'It’s going to happen, so why worry? My generation got on with it. I do find people are always complaining these days. I try to remain cheerful, not grumpy. I’ve developed glaucoma, but the drops I have to put in my eyes have made my lashes grow! So there is always a plus side!'

We couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

I do not see the point of this. An attractive woman, sure, but time to realise when to "let go".

What a great lady & a super attitude to go with it - the body does age - but it's what's in the heart & mind that keeps life great - we should all take a lead from her & grow old gracefully.

I think that she's beautiful and brave. I want to be that daring when I'm 83.

Even in her mature age I can see she was an attractive lady. These photos do not do her justice, the photographer could have made a better effort. These photos are not nice to look at.

What a great example of ageing gracefully! I am in that middle phase - 46 - trying to preserve what once was and finding the transition challenging. It's not the passing years that worry me - learning more about the world and myself is a gift and age is just a number - but the inevitable loss of what we associate with being "youthful" is tricky. I hope I never just "let go" and always strive to put my best foot... and face forward, with a little help from Fairlady!

What an amazing Lady! I am 71 and hope I have such a positive attitude when I reach her age. So many much younger ladies are continually moaning. You can't change the ageing but good attitude with health and happiness are so important. Well done ageing gracefully.

Wow! I want to have her energy and spunk when I grow up:-) The world would be a healthy place if more people embraced "maturing" the same way as Daphne. She reminds me of Katharine Hepburn... Double wow!

I feel better already! I'm 66 and always try to be as fashionable as possible - it's good to see fellow 'older' ladies in the spotlight. How about featuring her in fashionable clothes suitable for our age?
