Beneath the BB Cream

15 October 2012

BB Creams are taking the beauty world by storm. We get to the bottom of the latest trend in skincare.

Beneath the BB Cream

What exactly is a BB Cream?

Did you know that one BB Cream is sold every 5 seconds worldwide? Known as a “beauty balm” or “blemish balm”, BB Creams can be compared to tinted moisturisers, but with added beauty benefits to help the skin.

Mineral pigments found in the formula create an even skin tone while keeping the natural texture of the skin. Vitamin C and E anti-oxidants mop up free radicals which prolong the onset of aging and protect the skin from external pollutants. Vitamin C brightens dull-looking skin, giving the complexion a radiant glow.

Ingredients like chamomile are added to calm and soothe, making BB creams a great choice for those who have sensitive skin. Majority of products also contain an SPF.

The BB trend originated in Korea, where the market is fanatical about flawless-looking, porcelain skin. In fact, most brightening and pigmentation formulas are tested in this particular market before they’re launched worldwide. Once the miracle cream hit the western world, a dewy-looking glow became everyone’s skincare must-have.

BB creams are fantastic for the following concerns: excessive oiliness, dehydration, acne and even act as a concealer for blemishes. They are highly recommended for those who prefer light coverage.

A match made in heaven

Remember, it’s important to choose the correct shade when purchasing a BB Cream, just like you would when buying a foundation. Chat to beauty advisors in stores and ask them what they would recommend, or better yet, get your hands on a sample. Apply the BB cream to the bottom of the jawline and if the formula fades or “melts” into your skin, then you’ve found your perfect colour.

I have been using the Estee Lauder BB. Cream since it launched here. Its a great alternative to wearing heavy foundations although it should be made in more than 3 shades.

Using an Estee Lauder one currently and very pleased. Probably the best for people without major concerns, as it is indeed a light coverage product.

Have tried it but 3 shades are definitely not enough, not terribly impressed.

I was eagerly awaiting the Smashbox one to be launched in SA but it seems they didn't being us all the shades. I've been using the Garnier one since September and I think its great value for money. I just use an additional sunscreen underneath for stronger protection.
