How to apply self-tan

Give skin a sexy glow in four easy steps!

Step 1: Prep

Exfoliate with a granular scrub to smooth skin and prevent dry patches from absorbing colour unevenly. Pay special attention to knees, elbows and ankles. Follow with a soap-free body wash. Rinse and dry the skin completely, allowing five minutes for skin to cool before applying the self-tan.

Step 2: Colour

Always apply self-tan in a well-lit area. Squeeze a generous blob onto the palms of your hands, rub together and massage into the skin. Working in circular movements, start at the ankles and work your way up to the neck, avoiding knees, elbows and the tops of feet. When the lotion is almost absorbed, sweep what remains on your hands over knees, elbows and feet.

If you’re using a spray tan, spritz it directly onto the skin from a distance of about 20cm, rubbing it in after finishing each body part. Remember to wash hands and scrub nails thoroughly with soap after application. Wait at least 20 minutes for the self-tan to dry before dressing.

Step 3: Finishing touches

Use a bronzing liquid to deepen the colour for special occasions. Pour bronzer into your palms and skim lightly over legs, arms and chest in long, even strokes. Give skin a sexy shimmer by dusting a little bronzing powder onto shoulders, cleavage and décolletage.

Step 4: Maintenance

Keep your tan looking fresh by exfoliating every third day and reapplying your self-tan afterwards. In-between exfoliations, make sure you moisturise to keep skin soft and supple. Remember to apply sunscreen if you venture outdoors, as most self-tan formulas don’t contain one.

Tip: Streaky tan? Either apply more self-tan to the area, or rub the streaks with half a lemon.
