How to get the look

20 December 2011

Beauty assistant Kelli Clifton chatted to make-up artist Linda O'Connell about seven looks she created using Maybelline products.

Look: Dramatic Diva

When it comes to trends, is there more focus on the eyes (lashes) at the moment or lips (bold colour)?

LINDA: In my opinion, they are both incredibly trendy at the moment. However, my favourite look to create would have to be eyes.

This look isn’t a smokey eye, as there’s no eyeshadow used. Would a bold red or fuschia lip work here?

LINDA: No, only a light pink lip would work for this look. The eyeliner used here creates such a solid and dramatic line that the bold lip colour would fight the already heavy eye makeup.

Look: Glitz 'n Glam

Any tips or tricks when it comes to lipgloss?

LINDA: Don’t wear lipgloss if you’re going to the beach! It’ll just get stuck in your hair if it’s windy.

If you suffer from dry lips, is it OK to wear lipgloss?

LINDA: Absolutely. A lot of lipglosses have a built-in conditioner that nourishes and can be quite relieving for the lips.

Look: Soft ‘n Dreamy

This look focuses on making the skin look soft and natural. Would you recommend a Maybelline tinted moisturiser?

LINDA: Unfortunately, there aren’t any Maybelline tinted moisturisers available in South Africa, but there are plenty of Maybelline foundations that have a built-in SPF.

Look: Wet 'n Wild

What eye colour would suit this eyeshadow look best?

LINDA: This eyeshadow would suit any eye colour really, just remember, when applying, keep close to the upper and lower lash line. Also, don’t blend beyond the length of the lashes. You don’t want to look too over the top.

Look: All Nighter

What is your top tip when sporting a red lip?

LINDA: I have two! Firstly, keep your eye makeup simple (therefore no smokey eye, gals!) and wear a long-wearing lipstick. This means you won’t have to touch it up as often. Red lipstick also makes your teeth look whiter!

Look: Natural Look

What is the easiest way to find the right foundation for your skin tone?

LINDA: It’s best to test a foundation on your cheek, up to your jawline. The product that melts into your skin the best (or looks basically invisible) is the perfect shade for you.

What is the biggest mistake women make when choosing foundation?

LINDA: Choosing the incorrect colour has got to be number one! Many women also wear a foundation that is too dark in order to fake a tan. I would recommend using a bronzer to achieve a healthy glow.

Look: Bold 'n Beautiful

Can one ever over-apply mascara?

LINDA: Yes! Don’t ever reapply mascara once it has dried. Rather apply more mascara when it’s still wet. There’s nothing worse than spider lashes!
