Win with Iman Cosmetics
Read our one–on-one with the beautiful Iman, and you could win one of three signed books

We caught up with gorgeous Iman (54-going-on-34!) at the Table Bay Hotel during her visit to South Africa for the official launch of Iman Cosmetics (visit a Stuttafords near you to experience the brand first hand.)
Q: How do the beauty needs of women of colour differ from those of Caucasian women and how does Iman Cosmetics address those concerns?
A: ‘For me the most important thing, the holy grail, and a problem for women of colour is finding a foundation and powder true to our skin tone. The industry has so many brands that cater to Caucasian women. If a brand has 12 colours for white women and they wish to branch into the black market, they usually just make an extension of a few darker shades but the formulation remains the same. Different skin tones need different formulations to achieve the best results. With the same formulation, you can only get so dark.
The key work here is ‘undertones’ and knowing what undertones are in a dark skin. For example most foundations for Caucasian skins have a pink undertone, whereas those for women of colour will be yellow or red. We understand that. That’s the difference between our brand and their brands, from day one.
Skincare is also vital. The thing to remember is that different skin types have different problems and different needs. My skin is more oily whereas yours is perhaps drier. My biggest problem as I age will be hyper-pigmentation, and yours will be wrinkles. The needs are different. Skincare is an investment! And it takes a lot of years for women to see a change, unlike with a cosmetic where, when you put it on you see immediate change.’
Q: What is your best makeup advice to women of colour in South Africa?
A: ‘My best advice for women is to realise that they are no set rules. You are the ruler and you must pick and choose what you want, with the help of trained experts. We will advise you, but you need to know what you want to achieve. Walk up to the cosmetic counter and tell us, ‘I want this, how do I get it?’
A lot of people get intimidated at a department store, especially if they don’t know exactly what they are looking for. We speak a different language; the customer is god and knows what she wants; we can show her what’s new and what to experiment with. Make-up is the easiest way to enhance your beauty and we want to make every women look the best she can be.
The second thing I really want women to be aware of is that sun care is very important. Iman products have a SPF of 15. That is important, regardless of where you are from or how dark you are. Everyone needs protection because the sun does not discriminate.’
Q: Are Iman beauty products suitable for all skin types and tones?
A: ‘I want women to get past the notion that Iman Cosmetics are only for black women. They’re not. They’re for Indian women, Middle Eastern women, mixed races, Latinas, Hispanics and even Orientals. Miss South Africa wears our foundation – she wears Clay 5 – and that is not even the lightest colour. We have even lighter than that. This brand is for all skin of colour. It’s not about ethnic backgrounds, it’s purely about skin tone.’
Q: What is your biggest beauty trend for Spring?
A: ‘Relaxed glamour. We’re looking at lip stains rather than lipsticks; a hint of colour rather than too much. We see a trend at the moment where people are incorporating small touches of colour into their wardrobe and make-up and that’s what we want to achieve. Just light, minimum make-up, a subtle flush of colour. It makes everyone look healthier.
And of course, even just foundation without lip gloss, mascara or anything! With the right foundation your skin looks better than ever – that’s the power of foundation. Just by finding your foundation and knowing it by name you’ll be able to ask for it and that in itself gives you self-confidence. We don’t want to transform you into someone else, but rather to make you think when you look in that mirror, ‘Wow, this is the best I’ve ever looked’.’
WIN one of three personally signed copies of Iman's book, The Beauty of Color (valued at R500 each), by telling us why you need it.
Competition ends Wednesday 14th April, 2010.

Iman is the epitome of true beauty and sophistication and is a very respectable role model. She is breathtakingly stunning and fabulous, yet she appeals to real women with flaws too. I think it is inspiring that Iman’s mission is not to create supermodels, but rather that she aims to make you go: “Wow, I’m gorgeous, but I still look like myself, but just more impressive!" *PS! I would be soooo thrilled to win one of Iman’s new books! She is a true inspiration! Love, Bianca xxDenise

I believe that each and every woman has the potential to be as exotically groomed as Iman. We may not all be Supermodels, but we are all Super Women... let us celebrate! Besides, we all learn new things every day, and books are great ways of learning!Ruline
I would love to have a copy Iman's book, because I always struggle to match the correct shades!Rooksana

Iman is a ageless beauty, something we all aspire to (if you would like to admit it or not.) I also sell cosmetics of a well-known South African skincare brand, and with this book I will also be able to enhance my knowledge of all skin types and skin tones. Make-up and skin care is there to make us look and feel better about ourselves, and it need to utilised. You do not need to spend thousands of rands on make-up and skincare, but make sure you look after yourself, and use information that is available to assist you (i.e.Iman book).Elmarie Barnard
I desperately need this book! My extent of make-up knowledge is eyeliner and mascara! With this book I will be able to know exactly what to do and when to do it and how to do it! With this book I will become the goddess every woman deserves to be!Taige Davies
I know this is weird but I need to win this book to give it to my girlfriend. She always complains about how she doesn't know what to do with her make-up and in the end she always gives up and goes out without make-up. Please help a man whose trying to help out his girlfriend.Patricia Lester
Because I want to find out what her beauty secrets are and how she juggles her career with marriage to David Bowie.Jacqui
I quit my high-powered executive position in the corporate world last year so that I could be a full time mom to my son who was feeling the effects of a mom working a 16 hour day. Unfortunately, it was a huge trade off. I love my family more than anything in this world but now have to budget and cannot afford the the facials, expensive night and day creams. I know I made the right decision and I have not a single regret, however I miss life's little luxuries. Imam represents everything luxuries, beautiful and timeless!Nan
Iman was the one of the first women of colour in the modelling world....to have a book written by her, guiding me as a women of colour is priceless. So many black women don't wear make-up, not because they don't like it, but because its so foreign to them. They have never seen products in stores that resonate with their skin. I have always been drawn to the everything fashion and beauty and along the way have made many mistakes, whether it be foundation, or eye shadow....I have been learning the hard way. Iman's book would be the perfect guide for what not to do for a dark skinned women like myself.competitions46
Would like to have a copy of this book.Caria Botha
apart from the fact that I am passionately 'in love' with make-up I also admire Iman, her beauty is so unique. To me she is one of the most beautiful, timeless women in the world. When I think of her there is no-one I can compare her to. I appreciate the way she does business. So to me she is a rolemodel. She exuberates strength and of course make-up is a helping-hand... That is why I would enjoy a special 'spoil' like the Beauty of color...jens
After attending the Iman breakfast at the Table Bay hotel and saw first hand how beautiful and young she looks, the book will be of great value to me. I also had to go to Stuttafords to see her once again and purchase some of her make-up products.sue
I seem to have lost my way with make up and need directions! I am wearing the same shade of lipstick and eye colour that I wore in my twenties and I know that I need to 'up' my look. A makeover would be great but would probably last a day or so but a book will equip me with the knowledge to last me a lifetime. I hope its my lucky day!
