Beauty Resolutions for 2012

17 January 2012

I solemnly swear to abide by these resolutions to have the most beautiful year yet.

1) Wear sunscreen everyday!

After discovering a melanoma on my forearm in October last year, I’ve become sunscreen-obsessive. My dermatologist informed me that it was due to a bad burn from when I was a child. So now I never lie in the sun, EVER. Scary, right? Here’s my advice: If you do happen to lie in the sun, wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50. Reapply reapply reapply! And make an appointment to see your dermatologist!

2) Drink more water

I’ve always wanted to start drinking more water (at least two litres per day) and I can safely say that I’ve done it for a solid week and there’s no looking back! I feel like a different person. It must be all the toxins that I’ve flushed out!

3) Quit smoking

Although quite challenging to quit cold turkey, some people I know who’ve stopped smoking say it’s one of the best things they’ve ever done. Food tastes better and they can smell again! Seriously! Give your lungs a fresh start and say no to those cancer sticks.

4) Clean your cell phone

Of course, this is necessary! You’d be shocked to find out how much bacteria is on your cell phone. Germs multiply in warm places and with the germs of your hands (See Resolution 8) and face mixing with the heat of your phone, you’ve got a bacterial jungle! Bottom line is, clean your phone.

5) Throw away old makeup products

I also find it hard to say goodbye to my trusty old mascara that has been there for me when I’ve had to go to a function at the last minute without warning. But use your discretion, when it starts to dry up or smell a bit funky, it’s time to turf it!

6) Before using a heated tool (such as an iron or a hairdryer), use a heat-protectant product

Heated tools are probably one of the beauty products that women (and men!) are most grateful for. But did you know, that if you don’t apply a heat-protectant product onto your hair before you use the tool, you actually burn your hair? It’s just like putting unprotected skin outside on a sweltering hot day. Look after your locks and purchase a heat-protectant product today.

7) Start exfoliating your skin

It is essential to exfoliate your skin at least twice a week. Not only will it remove dead skin cells, but your skin will also feel smoother and look more radiant. It also prevents blackheads and spots.

8) Wash your hands thoroughly

It’s something that you should be doing, everyday! But you’d be surprised how many people actually don’t. Gross. Germs lurk everywhere! Rather be safe than violently ill.

9) Remove your makeup before bedtime

Yes, we know it’s time-consuming (not really, but this is the excuse that people make!) but you’re doing your skin the biggest favour! I’m sure you wouldn’t like to sleep with a plastic packet over your head at night (trust me, you wouldn’t be able to!) so why do that to your skin?

10) Try something new!

Remember that haircut that you always wanted to get? And what about the red lipstick you were dying to wear but didn’t have the confidence? A new year gives you the opportunity to start anew. I urge you to get a new look. You’re bound to receive plenty of compliments too. What a great way to start a year!
