Evan Török reviews the signature hot golf ball massage at Breathe Spa.

Breathe Spa at Pearl Valley Golf Estate

After a solid hour of horse-riding through Pearl Valley’s gorgeous hiking trails earlier that morning, a hot golf ball massage sounded too good to be true! As soon as I arrived at Breathe Spa, the prestige Golf Estate’s in-house spa, I was welcomed by my therapist, Jennie. She instructed that I should lie face down on the heated massage table and make myself as comfortable as possible.

Before the treatment began, I informed Jennie that I prefer a hard, firm massage pressure. She started massaging the backs of my legs with grapeseed oil, mixed with a delicate hint of lime essential oil. The aroma of the oil was perfect; incredibly calming yet not overpowering. Once the muscles were warmed up, she then proceeded to knead an already warmed golf ball into my legs with long, firm strokes. The heat of the ball was transferred almost immediately, which relaxed my tired muscles. As soon as the heat faded within one ball, another pre-heated golf ball replaced it. Next, it was pressed into my feet, concentrating on the arch, heel and middle area.

Jennie then decided to tackle my back. I was suffering with an intense strain in my left shoulder. She proceeded to massage my back firmly with a consistent rhythm, which I thoroughly enjoyed. She used the same method as before on my legs, by warming up my muscles and then working the golf balls onto the tense areas on my back. I then turned over onto my back and Jennie worked my upper shoulder region, neck and pectorals, all while my eyes were covered with a warm towel. Overall, the uniquely heated massage aided my blood circulation throughout my body, leaving me feeling relaxed and stress-free.

Verdict

I preferred the hot golf balls as a massaging tool in comparison to hot stones as I found the indents to work the tension away quicker. Hot stones sometimes tend to burn, while the golf balls carry a sufficient heat and are kinder to the skin.

I highly recommend this treatment to both men and women, especially if you’ve got problematic tension areas.
