Eyelash Extensions with Carolyn Cowley
FAIRLADY’s Beauty Editor Candice-Lee Kannemeyer gets eyelash extensions!
FAIRLADY’s Beauty Editor Candice-Lee Kannemeyer had eyelash extensions done by Award-winning Beauty therapist, Cape Town-based Carolyn Cowley last week. Candice has incredibly sensitive eyes and was super-impressed by the results, so if you’re on the fence about deciding whether or not to get them done, I suggest you read further!
Step One
Make sure that all mascara and any form of eye makeup is removed from the eye area. If you have blonde, or very light eyelashes, it is advisable to have them tinted. This can be done by the Carolyn.
Step Two
Adhesive anti-ageing gel eye pads are stuck on the lower lashes. This is done in order to separate them from the top lashes, and most importantly, to prevent the eyelashes from being glued shut.
Step Three
The lashes are applied simultaneously starting from the outer corners of each eye, working towards the middle.
Fact: The false lashes are made out of synthetic fibre, as this is the softest material and looks the most realistic.
Carolyn says: “I will be applying a mixture of long and short lashes to Candice’s eyes. It will almost look like a cat-eye lash effect.”
Step Four
Remove the eye pads and allow the glue to dry well. A fan may be used gently if necessary.
Fact: This eyelash extension procedure is safe for those who have completed chemotherapy.
Candice’s Verdict
“I have extremely sensitive eyes and I was so pleasantly surprised at how gentle and relaxing the whole procedure was. I almost fell asleep! I think my lashes look absolutely fab – I certainly don’t have to wear any mascara!”
Do’s and Don’ts
- Don’t wet your eyes for 24hrs after you’ve had your eyelash extensions. (This means no crying, no adding of EyeGene, no sweating, no washing face with water).
- For the duration of wearing your eyelash extensions, do not use any oil-based products on your eyes.
Instead, use oil-free: eye makeup removers, eye creams, cleansers, eyelash serums, eyeshadow cream formulations, mascaras, liquid liners, etc.
- Do invest in a little mascara wand / comb and gently brush your lashes (if needs be) every morning to ensure your lashes look as fresh and fabulous as possible.
For the First-Timers
The lengths of the eyelash extensions range from 7mm – 15mm. Carolyn recommends that for your first eyelash extension experience, you should only go 1mm longer than your actual eyelash length. As for different thicknesses, the lengths range from 0.15mm – 0.25mm.
PLEASE NOTE: The false lashes are safe for people with sensitive eyes, but be weary about having the procedure done too often. It could lead to a reaction.
Lash Fills
It is advisable to go and have lash fills once you have had your eyelash extensions. All of us have a different lash cycle, therefore our eyelashes fall out at different rates, so use your discretion. Carolyn recommends coming for fills every 2-3 weeks.

1 Week Fill: R100
2 Week Fill: R175
3 Week Fill: R250
4 Week Fill: R325

Looks amazing...This is something I will refer to my wife as she goes to great lengths to build eye lash volume with a range of different masscaras....The price is also very reasonable considering that a good massacara will cost in the region of R450-R500 and gives a longer and better result....I would be curious to find out how water exposure from washing and swimming would effect the adhesive properties of the extentions. Thanks Kelli well written and informative piece....natashaeli

Can definitely recommend eyelash extentions - had them done last year for my 60th and they looked awesome - lasted about 5 weeks with gradual loss of the false eyelashes - no damage to my own. Awesome, awesome.adele sutton
