Great Texts/Big Questions Public Lecture
This is a series of lectures given by world-renowned scholars coordinated by the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts
The inaugural Great Texts/Big Questions public lecture will be held at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
This is a series of lectures given by world-renowned scholars coordinated by the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA) www.gipca.uct.ac.za and Imraan Coovadia of UCT’s Centre for Creative Writing.
Each lecture will include a highly regarded thought leader will discussing the personal significance of a particular book or artwork.
The series will commence with novelist, playwright and academic Andre Brink discussing Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes:

Where: Hiddingh Hall, UCT’s Hiddingh campus, 31 – 37 Orange Street, Cape Town
This will be followed by AIDS activist Zackie Achmat on 13 August disussing the “Communist Manifesto” and “The Gettysburg Address”; cartoonist Jonathan ‘Zapiro’ Shapiro on 20 August discussing “Maus” by Art Spiegelman and David Benatar, Head of Department of Philosophy at UCT on 27 August discussing “Is life meaningless?”
Other speakers include world renowned neuroscientist Mark Solms on 3 September, mathematician George Ellis on 17 September and well known professional and academic Mamphela Ramphele on 1 October. Their topics of discussion will be released closer to the time.
The audience is encouraged to familiarise themselves with the text beforehand, so they will be able to contribute to discussion if they wish.
All lectures are free, open to the public as well as University staff and students. They intend to engender a culture of exchange of ideas, opinions and conjecture.
