We met as students in December of 2009 when we both went on an outreach programme with our church in Stellenbosch to the Devonvalley. I wouldn’t call it love at first sight but it didn’t take much longer than that. We started dating 3 months later and the night I asked her out I told her I was going to marry her. And so it happened that we got engaged 10 months later. Our wedding day is exactly what we wanted. Not everything went according to plan yet it was perfect. We got married in a very small town (very small; with a population of about 135) called Boston which is in the Natal Midlands. This is where my wife grew up and her parents still farm. It was a true farm wedding in that the ceremony was in a 200 year old yellow wood barn and the reception was a the farmers hall, The Boston Country Blub. Boston is a very tight knit community and almost everyone in town had a hand in planning the day. Friends and family came from very far to share in our day, some even from as far as England, Australia and Holland and all the accommodation in town was booked out. There were so many special moments that stood out. Our friends coming from so far, getting caught in a cloud burst during our photo session and having our first dance to the beat of our guests’ clapping hands due to a power failure (which was so much fun). But what sums up the day best was the small wooden heart at the entrance to the barn which had written on it: “Today I marry my best friend”. And that is exactly what happened.
