Local fashion news round up

27 June 2012

We give you a round up of the latest fashion news that has the FAIRLADY team excited.

Leigh Schubert dresses our Olympic team

Top local designer, Leigh Schubert has designed the South African Olympic Team’s opening ceremony kit. Commenting on the achievement to Barbara Cole of www.iol.co.za Leigh said, ‘I’m ecstatic. This is an amazing thing for me, as countries around the world have had their opening ceremony outfits designed by the likes of Ralph Lauren for the USA and Stella McCartney for the UK. These are amazing international brands and for me to represent South Africa is incredible.’

When describing her designs to Barbara Cole she said, ‘I really wanted something nice and strong and bright for when the team comes out into the stadium. I want Team South Africa to stand out and I think they will. And I did not want them wearing green Crocs as once before.’

Leigh beat 19 other local designers in the competition to design the outfits and confirmed that all the garments (which were revealed last week) would be made in South Africa.

Top shop is coming to Cape Town

Unknown Union, a boutique on Kloof Street in Cape Town, will be hosting a Top Shop pop up store from 12 July. The dedicated Topman/Topshop “shop-in-shop” will feature a curated selection of men’s and women’s fashions from the British brand.

Top Shop was opened in the UK in 1964 and has a cult following for always being on the pulse of current trends. Aside from its own in-house collection, Top Shop has also offered a platform to young designers and embarked on collaborations with UK’s best young design talent including Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane, Jonathan Saunders and Mary Katrantzou.

Zara is even closer to Cape Town

The first store opened in Sandton City, Johannesburg, which was soon followed by a sister store opening in Gateway, Durban. Cape Tonians were desperate and kept asking, ‘When is Zara coming to our city?’ Then CNA in the V&A Waterfront closed down and speculation was rife. Residents began to walk past and consider whether it would be big enough to host the Spanish-based mega brand.

And then twitter was a buzz as soon as the Zara signage went up to advertise that the store would be interviewing candidates for store staff. It is confirmed Zara is coming to the V&A Waterfront! While the company is still tight-lipped about when this will happen, you can rely on FAIRLADY to keep you in the loop and help you get your shopping list ready.
