Destination Dining at The Westcliff

16 April 2012

With a new chef heading up the kitchen at The Westcliff Hotel’s La Belle Terrasse restaurant, there are more reasons than ever to head up the hill for a fine dining experience.

La Belle Terrasse has always been a great destination for a romantic evening, simply because of the spectacular views over the northern suburbs of Jozi. Now chef Klaus Beckmann has added another layer of interest with a menu that is designed around the produce of local terroir. And with locally sourced and produced food a hotter-than-ever trend, it’s a winning concept.
The menu reflects Klaus’s interest in local, authentic tastes – but with an adventurous twist. There’s an offal section for those interested in sharing Klaus’s enthusiasm for the snout to tail approach – including sweetbreads, ox tongue and veal kidney, and an African menu featuring lots of game in interesting combinations.

The night FAIRLADY dined there, the food was entirely memorable, enhanced by the attentive service of sommelier Bongani Ngwenya. Each course was beautifully plated with exciting flavour combinations, but the highlight of the meal had to be the rolled loin of Karoo lamb with baby carrots, a potato brick and a mango and ginger relish, while dessert stole the show with a chocolate trio that had us wishing that licking the plate was acceptable practice.

In his quest for fascinating food combinations, Klaus is hosting a Gilroy’s Beer and Food Evening on 26 April. In conjunction with local micro-brewer Steve Gilroy, he will present each of Steve’s four beer specialities paired with a different course. Booking is essential for this one!

We all know how hard it is for vegetarians and especially vegans to find a fine dining experience that will cater to their specific requirements, but Klaus is interested in making fine dining accessible for everyone, so with this in mind he will happily cater for vegetarians and vegan meals on request. Klaus and his new pastry chef, Lindy Pretorius can even do a gluten-free vegan high tea on request, which certainly makes the Westcliff a good bet for special-diet food lovers. Lindy makes absolutely everything from scratch on the premises, including the bread and sorbets, so every detail of the sweet stuff is memorable – and if gluten-free is requested, it’s guaranteed to deliver.
