67 minutes for Mandela Day

It’s Mandela Day on 18 July – your opportunity to help change the world for the better by donating 67 minutes of your day to a worthy cause. Anyone can be a part of this great initiative, but sometimes it can be tricky to know how or where to help. We have compiled a few activities that are happening all over the country. You can make your 67 minutes count in your own unique way or join in one of these activities in your city.

GAUTENG:

Visit Impilo Place of Safety and donate your 67 minutes of service. Participants are requested to bring a tin of Nan (formula milk) or packet of Huggies nappies.

Where: Glenhazel, Johannesburg

Join Bikers For Mandela Day as they visit cities to spread the word about Nelson Mandela's legacy. You can register to join them on this journey and help with fundraising.

Date: 14 July

Where: Irene Village Mall, Pretoria

Teach SA in partnership with Lupi Ncayisa Foundation will be giving away new school shoes to learners at Zonkizizwe Secondary School in Katlehong. Teach SA Ambassadors will also commit to mentoring grade 1 learners for one year.

Where: Johannesburg

Nelson Mandela Square together with SAFM are collecting non-perishable foodstuffs, which will be taken to the Ithlokomeleng Old Age Home in Alexandra. You can bring your donations on the day.

KWAZULU-NATAL:

Gandhi Development Trust and Durban University of Technology will be invovled in the Umgeni River Mouth Clean Up Project. Volunteers will be picking up litter and debris from the area.

WESTERN CAPE:

You can be part of the legacy project, which will undertake renovating City Hall.

Where: Cape Town

Date: 16 July

NATIONWIDE:

The Mandela Day container libraries initiative is linked to the 94+ Schools Infrastructure Project, and serves to provide opportunities for members of the public to become involved. People can volunteer as librarians, assist with sorting of books or book drives or even reading activities with learners. Visit their website for details.

The Pick n Pay will be placing branded boxes at its stores to collect story books for children, which will be distributed to various schools to boost and support the establishment of library facilities. All donations are welcome.
