Cape Town wins World Design Capital 2014
The Mother City gets another prestigious title under its belt and its well-deserved.
Cape Town beat off competition from both Dublin and Bilbao to be crowned the World Design Capital for 2014.
Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Patricia de Lille, accepted the award on behalf of The Mother City, at the IDA congress in Tapei on 26 October.
The sought-after title, which is awarded bi-annually by the International Council for Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID), will see Cape Town host a number of design events and conferences organised by the World Design Capital initiative and the local committee.
Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile was quoted as saying "We are honoured that Cape Town is the first city in Africa to achieve this award."
