Coping with difficult situations

30 April 2012

We asked our Facebook readers and the FAIRLADY team how they deal with stress.

We all have experienced difficult situations at some point in our lives whether at work or at home. In the May issue of FAIRLADY, we wrote about when bravery is bad for you and how to deal with challenging situations (page 64).

We asked our Facebook readers and FAIRLADY team to share their coping mechanisms. Here are some of the responses:

'Exercise does help me a lot.' - Nonkululeko Zama Ntshangas

'Breath and I remind myself that things will get better.' - Natasha Ronald

'I write down everything I need to do, and I tick each thing off as I go. Also, I set rewards and goals for myself, like going shopping at the end of the month if I’ve finished a task.' - Cassidy Da Silva

'I deal with stressful situations by drinking large quantities of alcohol, and sticking my fingers in my ears and shouting "Lalalalalalala!" Shouting at my husband helps, too.' - Robyn Maclarty, senior sub-editor
'I try to keep organised with to-do lists and diaries. Writing it down makes me feel like I’m half-way there and there’s nothing better than ticking something off my list. However, dealing with a stressful situation can be very tough and sometimes no amount of planning can actually prevent it. I try to remove myself from the situation and take a few deep breaths, this way my emotions don’t get the better of me. Also I then feel like I’m outside of the situation, can develop a solution and then jump right in and do it.' - Jennifer Searle, online editor

'The best way for me to deal with the stressful situations is to remind myself that "this too shall pass." By tomorrow or the next month I know I will be laughing at a once insurmountable situation!' - Catherine Zachariou, senior beauty assistant

I think it depends if u have a positive attitude or a negative attitude towards ur problems, having a positive attiutude is normally the best solution for all problems because negativity causes more stress and depression. Most of the time there is a solution to all problems having faith is the best policy.
