Love and affection: The power ballads album

11 July 2012

FAIRLADY digital editor, Jen Searle reviews this compilation of love songs.

  Inside track
SABC 3 is known for offering up great CD compilations –  generally choosing a music genre or a decade – these CDs offer a great summary of the best songs in that genre or era. This is the ultimate love song album –we’re so sure of this that we can guarantee you’ll be pounding your hand on chest, singing along and gushing ‘I love this song’ with each new track.

Quotable lyrics
It's a quarter after one, I'm all alone and I need you now/Said I wouldn't call but I lost all control and I need you now/And I don't know how I can do without/I just need you now (from ‘Need you now’ – Lady Antebellum)

Key tracks
How do you choose just one favourite love song from a three CD offering? We chose one from each CD to be fair!
‘Need you now’ – Lady Antebellum
‘Come away with me’ – Norah Jones
‘Love me for me’ - Jamali

Sound off
There is nothing like visiting the loves and losses of your past. Music connects us to certain times (and people) in our lives and no song is quite as memorable as a love song. Whether it’s your first serious heartache or the song you danced to on your wedding day, love songs have a way of making all of us smile fondly while remembering the good (and bad) times of the past and present. This CD is a trip down memory lane that pulls together a number of decades from present day radio hits to moody 80s! However I feel I should recommend this CD with a precaution, love songs can be sad especially if listened to repetitively or on a bottle of wine, so be sure to space the CDs out!

If you like this, then you probably like compilations so try Now That’s What I Call Music 60.
