Simple green tips
The FAIRLADY team and readers offer their top (and easy) green tips!
In the June issue of FAIRLADY we've featured recipes to help you make your own 'green' household cleaning products (page 173). Going green is not always about complicated costly measures. There are easy and simple sustainable choices that you can adopt in your home to save money while you save the environment. We asked you on Facebook and Twitter to share some of your greens tips:
'I think mostly going green also means saving money, and I think everyone could save a little money in today's life. My hubby and I just got into the habit of turning things we're not using off at the plug. We've saved more than 100 units this month by just doing that.' - Carien Van Dalen
'Tea tree oil is a wonderful deodoriser and disinfectant. 3 or 4 drops diluted in 500ml of warm water can remove almost any odour.' - Kathija Hoosain
'A solar hot water system and a gas stove top!' - Marguerite Hemming Van Blerk
We also asked the FAIRLADY team to share their top (and easy) green tips:
'Use grey water from the kitchen in your garden.' - Melanie Fortuin-Durr, associate publisher
'I would say recycle, recycle and recycle - it's so easy once you're in the habit.' - Sally Kramer, consumer test house editor
'My personal crusade is to eliminate water wastage. I can’t stand it when I see that a pipe has burst in the street and precious water is gushing down the road. My top tip is to do everything you can do to save water: put a bucket in the shower to save wasted water and use it to water your plants; report burst pipes to the local authorities; check and replace your washers so that drippy taps don’t add wastage to your water bill and ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS switch off taps while brushing your teeth or shaving!'- Jennifer Searle, digital editor
