Your first dance songs

Planning your wedding? Your first song might not be top of mind so here is some inspiration from the FAIRLADY team.

Your first dance songs

We're feeling romantic in the office. The latest issue of FAIRLADY Bride is in stores and we've all been sharing our wedding stories with each other in the office. Most of us agreed that we loved our first dance - it is such an intimate moment and is a great memory from the special day.

There are plenty of details to consider and music or a song might be low down on your wedding planning list so we decided to share our experiences with you - it might just inspire some great ideas. Here are some first songs from the FAIRLADY team.

"It was Louis Armstrong growling his way through ‘Dream a Little Dream of Me’ ... Not the easiest song to dance to, as it turned out!"- Suzy Brokensha, editor

"'Spend my life' by Tamai & Eric Bennet" - Kim Franks, production manager

"We didn’t have a first dance but we played ‘You and me’ by The Wannadies when we walked into the venue. We walked in as the chorus played – the lyrics are: ‘You and me always, and forever’. I loved that moment!" - Jennifer Searle, digital editor

"Does the popping of champagne corks count? The idea of my husband and I doing a ‘first dance’ is utterly hilarious. I don’t know who would have found it more amusing, us or our friends. I always thought ‘Stay’ by Maurice Williams + the Zodiacs would be cute though."- Robyn McLarty, senior sub-editor

"I would be terribly twee, I’m afraid, so I’d even go for 'Love is all around' (Wet Wet Wet’s version). But here are others:
'The way you look tonight' by Fred Astaire;
'Dance (in the old-fashioned way)' by Charles Aznavour;
'All Time High' by Rita Coolidge;
'If you could read my mind' by Gordon Lightfoot;
'We’re all alone' by Rita Coolidge; and
'Redemption Song' by Bob Marley." - Sameena Amien, chief sub-editor

"We chose ‘Beautiful’ by The Parlotones – not exactly traditional first dance material, but a song my husband and I loved singing loudly whenever we were in the car together. We realised just before the wedding that the lines ‘I tell you for free, this is just formula, this is just chemistry, none of this is real to me’ weren’t particularly optimistic, but hoped that everyone would be so blown away by our mad dancing skills that they wouldn’t notice them." - Elizabeth Atmore, health editor

"Fun fact: if it weren’t for my sister’s eagle eyes we would have walked onto the dance floor and started dancing to another Parlotones song: ‘Giant Mistake’! I’d messed up the song numbers and accidentally listed that one for the DJ to play. Here’s how it would have gone:

'What the hell were we thinking
Were we thinking at all
What the hell did we believe we'd achieve
We stood there with our hearts exposed
As the others said I told you so
What the hell
What the hell’

Now that would have been awkward!" - Elizabeth

We also asked readers to tell us what song they played for their first dance. Here are some of their answers:

'I wanna grow old with you' by Westlife - Karin Van Niekerk Behrens

'Have I told you lately' by Van Morrison (not Rod Srewart) - Tanya van Onselen

'I finally found someone' by Barbara Streisand and Bryan Adams - Shireen Hobbs Fredericks

'I'm yours' by The Script - Lerato Kantue

'More than words' by Extreme - spine tinglingly romantic! - Shirley Bowers Van Rensburg

Gwen Stefani's 'What you waiting for?' - it was great fun! - Taryn Schultz

'My baby just cares for me' - LOVE that song and had such a ball going to dancing lessons to learn some moves - Cheryl Meyer

'I'll be there' by The Parlotones – surprisingly it makes quite a good sokkie song too and we nailed it! Best day of my life! - Cath Day
