David Nicholls is the bestselling author of Us (longlisted for the Man Booker Prize for Fiction in 2014) and, more famously, One Day, which went on to become a blockbuster film starring Anne Hathaway. David’s novels have sold over eight million copies worldwide and are published in 40 languages.
He is also a screenwriter, with TV credits including the third series of Cold Feet, a much-praised modern version of Much Ado About Nothing, The 7.39 and an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles. David wrote the screenplays for Great Expectations (2012) and Far from the Madding Crowd (2015, starring Carey Mulligan) and he won a BAFTA for his recent adaptation of Patrick Melrose from the semi-autobiographical novels by Edward St Aubyn.
His highly anticipated new novel, Sweet Sorrow, is the story of one life-changing summer for 16-year-old Charlie Lewis. Charlie is the kind of boy you don’t remember in the school photograph. His exams have not gone well, and a long summer stretches ahead of him. At home he is looking after his father, when surely it should be the other way around, and if he thinks about the future at all, it’s with a kind of dread.
10 lucky readers can each win a copy of Sweet Sorrow by David Nicholls, worth R325 each.
